Tucson Airport

 

                           I.

 

The mountains’ circle deepens indigo. Day’s end

On the tarmac, yellow vests among the planes

Walk to and fro: one boy, curly-haired but maybe

Navajo—it’s Arizona—tells some tall tale to

A cart driver, who seems older than the rest—

Why still this job? He listens, arms crossed,

Poker face. The boy, smile widening

Nonetheless, mimes giant stirring: cooking

Story, or concrete? Hitting the punchline,

He breaks up. The old guy hesitates, then

Bursts out red-faced, laughs.

 

                                                          II.

 

Two—new hires?—standing by, blonde

Ponytail and burly friend, hearing the laughter,

Venture near. The storyteller waves them in, nods

To the driver, starts to demonstrate the gauges

On the cart, marked Flammable, Emergency Fuel

Cutoff—tank, dark hose. His joke about No Smoking

Makes them grin. Cinched like a battered

Holster on his hip, the old tools:

Ballpeen hammer, wrench.

 

 

                            III.

 

In the distance, from the mountains, the birds

Rise. Magnetic chip in each eye scans sun’s

Slant, warning to shelter for the night. The boy

Hears something—earphones?—then turns

Abrupt and walks away. The new ones

Follow, till the old guy waves them back.

As if by some code understood, he guns

His cart, heads toward the planes

At a sharp pace. Frowns, slows.

Down on the ground: a soda can

Unclaimed. Not stopping, leans

Out, snags it, doesn’t toss it in

The bin, veers from the planes.

He pours it out along his way,

Slow careful stream.

 

 

                       IV.

The boy stands under a huge wing.

He sees something: the wheel,

Seeming so small beneath, he

Kneels to, peers at, almost sniffs,

And runs his fingers, inch by inch

Down the rough tread. Beyond

His head, clouds settle now in

Crevices, but dark can’t blur

The jagged peaks piercing that

Veil. Far in the west, a plume

Ash-colored—mist?—or smoke?—

Snakes toward the sky.

 

 

                 V.

 

He rises, satisfied. Feet

Planted wide, he lifts

An orange day-glo

Like a torch. He

Hears something, then

Nods to the unseen.

Engines fire: gravity

Will be defied. He

Stands, the guide.

Drought

 

It’s not nothing. It’s just something

New. Not green, but brown. Not growing,

Gone. Thirst stiffens leaves to tongues

Too thick to speak: no clinging tendrils

Sigh windblown. Dry branches click,

Skin tearing skin. It’s “drought

Abandon”: shed what shows,

To save what stays. Shunt

To the root. Bloom, beauty,

Foliage, now revealed as

Junk. Don’t be tree,

Be trunk. The stomata, tiny

Pores, all hold their breath.

The grandest stand wilts,

Droops, contorts: all twists

Respected, none ridiculous

As death. Bereft of rain, you

Curl, tilt, fade. And shun

The once-bestowing Sun:

By it, betrayed. Beneath

A sky of haughty blue, who

Knew? That you could lose

So much, and still

Be you.

Garden Of The Gods

 

Relax. It’s not Paris. It’s just

Sacramento: new French bakery, opened

In old neighborhood, these houses built

Post-World War II and christened

Then, God knows why, Garden of

The Gods. Wary residents push

Through the scroll-etched door. Some

On walkers, some with children, stand

Before the bright glass case. In pride

Of place, like some pink massive

Oreo: giant rose-cream macaron, one

Candied rose petal, its crown.

Below, a row of religeuse robed

In cacao, at their feet the sunny shells

Of madeleines, strewn from the shore

Of Floating Islands’ billowed froth.

The petite clerk, not French but

Greek, tries with her customer

A joke, something with Makaron

Nesoi and Iles Flottantes. With

Blank smile he requests the last

St. Honore, its dark glazed dome

Tipped with gold flake. The room is

Airy, black-white tiles dusted by

Flour, one forbidden glassed-in

Chamber lined with spoons: deep silver

Basin where the liquid chocolate

Churns, with scarlet button on the wall:

“Emergency.” What kind? Patient

In line, each customer tries out

A treat, pink box then driven home

Through old familiar streets. There,

The bonsai tree shaped like a Z. On

Past, the yard bristling with 30-foot

Bamboo, scorned when planted, now

Of no note. Next door, that hoop for

Basketball goes unreported, though it

Hangs over the curb. Further down, that

Man’s house whose son died of

Drugs—wild boy—their yard since

Remaining dry and brown. No one

Complains. Across, a patch of dazzling

Green: renters, a young pair of alien

Tongue, who mow, edge, root out

Weedlings with some foreign fork, and

Halloweens hand out strange pastries

Dads tossed out, until the year moms

Probed their layers, ruled them safe.

Half that brick duplex: black Iraq vet

With one arm, who lets kids see his

Medals, but won’t talk. None too

Fond of his gay neighbors, anyhow

The three join forces on the Fourth, to

Grouse about the homes that don’t fly

Flags. That corner house, known for

Its morning glories tumbling down

The fence, a woman owns. Her

Garden hose can reach, but barely,

Thumb for spray, the scrawny

Rosebush in the yard that dad

Leaves dead. It blooms blood-red.

Some moonlit nights, she thinks

He steals out for a glance:

Buds straggling, thin, not like

The hothouse buds raised for

The macaron. No, these are

Real. Why risk—in this

Neighborhood with cars on

Blocks—a start-up French

Patisserie? What

Are the odds? Yet

It’s the Garden of the Gods.
